Manchester United have been reportedly “contacted” by representatives of Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong, with the Dutch international’s future in Spain “far from certain”, as per a recent report.
TBR Football reveals that a host of Premier League clubs, including the Red Devils, have been approached by intermediaries of De Jong about a potential blockbuster move at the end of the current season.
Premier League Clubs Contacted Over De Jong’s Situation
TBR Football can confirm that Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City, and Manchester United are the clubs that have been contacted and informed of Frenkie de Jong’s situation, with a view to a possible transfer deal this summer.
Manchester United’s Long-standing Interest in De Jong
The 27-year-old has been a long-standing target for Manchester United, as the club had previously agreed a €85 million deal with Barcelona to reunite the Ajax midfielder with his former manager Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.
However, the Mancunian side were unable to convince De Jong to make the switch during the negotiations, and the move ultimately collapsed.
Despite this, reports have continued to link the Dutchman with a move to Old Trafford, as United are in dire need of a midfielder with the profile of De Jong – a ball-playing maestro capable of dictating the game.
There had been optimism at the club that Kobbie Mainoo could grow into this role, but the academy starlet only turned 19 last season, and the expectation for him to offer the type of polished performances associated with an experienced midfielder has been misguided.
De Jong, with a wealth of experience at the highest level of club and international football, would be able to provide an immediate upgrade to Manchester United’s midfield unit and complement the existing stars in the team.
- De Jong’s ability to dictate the game and regain possession could be the perfect partner for the more combative midfielder Manuel Ugarte.
- This would also enable Bruno Fernandes to be pushed further forward, where United’s attack is crying out for more guile and threat.
However, Manchester United will face stiff competition from other Premier League clubs to secure the signature of Frenkie de Jong, with Arsenal and Liverpool also reportedly in the hunt for midfield reinforcements this summer.
Both Chelsea and Manchester City cannot be ruled out either, given their ongoing fragilities in the center of the pitch.
INEOS, the owners of Manchester United, will have to move quickly and decisively to trump their domestic rivals and secure the Dutch international’s signature, while also contending with his exorbitant wage packet at Camp Nou. But given the attributes he excels in are the exact ones missing from Manchester United’s team, it may prove a price worth paying.
